Although Windows 98 has built in DirectX support, it should be noted that your computer’s hardware must also support these features.  The most common cause of DirectX problems lies in your computer’s video card.  Older systems contain video cards that were created before the existence of DirectX.  In some cases your video card can be updated with new software to support DirectX.  Check with your card’s manufacturer for more details.

Also, Microsoft is constantly working on new and improved versions of DirectX.  Visit the Microsoft web site to make sure you have the latest version.
